I don’t know about you and your family, but in my home we love a good mug of homemade hot chocolate at the end of a cold winter day. It’s not a beverage we save only for the Christmas season. Growing up, I always loved when we would come in from skating on the pond or feeding the animals to a warm cup of homemade hot cocoa that my Mom had thoughtfully made for us. I also enjoyed it in the evenings when we would sit down as a family and have a game night or watch a special movie. Now that I am married and have a family of my own, I am determined to try and create similar special memories for my children as they grow up. Bonus points if I use healthy ingredients just like this recipe does.
Why not make hot cocoa mix instead? You can do whatever works best for you! I like to make it from scratch because it is simple and only takes a few minutes, but if you prefer the thought of having a dry cocoa mix ready to go, then go for it! Here is a great recipe for dry hot chocolate mix.
Tips for Making Healthy Yolky Hot Chocolate:
Healthy homemade hot chocolate is very easy to whip together in a matter of minutes, and you only need a handful of basic ingredients to do so. I like to use whole raw milk that I source from a local dairy as the main ingredient for this recipe. However, you can use whatever you have on hand! I used to have dairy goats, so at one point in time I had hot chocolate made with raw goat’s milk. It was delicious. You could also substitute with coconut milk, oat milk, almond milk, or whatever you prefer according to your dietary needs.
I always suggest that you use unsweetened cocoa powder. Conventional chocolate syrup is easy, but there are lots of added ingredients that are not necessary and do not add one good thing to the flavor of hot chocolate or the health of your kiddos.
I like to use pure cane sugar for this recipe, but you can totally use maple syrup, honey, brown sugar, or coconut sugar instead!
If you are feeling really fancy, you can add dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or semi-sweet chocolate to the milk as it warms to add extra richness. I don’t think anyone will complain.
Homemade Marshmallows:
Try making healthy homemade marshmallows to top your hot chocolate with! It is a fun quality time activity to do with kids, and it adds lots of protein to this treat. Making marshmallows at home allows you to have full control over what ingredients you are adding. Pure beef gelatin adds protein, and you can use natural sweeteners to compliment your taste. Making marshmallows at home also allows you to customize the flavor to your liking. The list of benefits goes on! Here is a great recipe to try if you are interested in making your own homemade marshmallows.
Why Use Raw Eggs?
Adding raw egg yolks to the milk as it warms helps give an extra protein boost to this drink. It also thickens the milk very slightly and makes it more rich and smooth. If you have picky eaters, this is a great way to sneak in some extra nutrients. They won’t suspect a thing!
It may seem strange to add egg yolk to your homemade drink, but it doesn’t taste like egg at all and therefore only offers health benefits without the expected “healthy” taste. You can add two egg yolks as the recipe says, but feel free to add more! I just would not recommend going over one egg yolk per cup of milk. Increase the water by one tablespoon per egg yolk as well.
Save your leftover egg whites to add into your next baking dish or breakfast scramble. Just put them in a sealed container and pop them in the fridge!
